The Spanish Coast Guard has released an image of three Nigerian men balancing on the rudder of a ship for 11 days across the ocean from Nigeria to the Canary Islands. Spain’s Maritime Rescue Services picked up the three men from the rudder of the Alithini II ship. The rescue services took them to the hospital for treatment. The three men exhibited symptoms of dehydration and hypothermia.
Two men were put back on the ship and deported to Nigeria. According to a local government spokesperson, the third person is still recovering in the hospital. A law enforcement spokesperson told Reuters News the law in Spain stipulates that if a stowaway does not seek asylum, they must be sent back to the original port by whoever runs the ship.
